What is a .cr3 file?

A CR3 file is Canon's current RAW format, introduced with the EOS M50 in 2018. It uses an ISO base media container (similar to MP4) rather than TIFF, and adds the space-saving C-RAW compressed variant. Like all RAW formats it stores the sensor's full capture — more dynamic range and color depth than any JPEG.

You'll find .cr3 files coming from Canon mirrorless and late DSLR bodies since 2018 — the EOS R, RP, R5, R6, R7, R8, R10 and R50, plus the M50 and 90D.

Why won't a .cr3 file open on my computer?

CR3 support lagged for years after launch: older versions of Photoshop, Lightroom and most bundled OS viewers simply don't recognize it, so a brand-new Canon shooter often can't open their own photos without installing or updating software.
