What is a .orf file?

An ORF (Olympus Raw Format) file stores the unprocessed sensor capture from an Olympus or OM System camera, along with full capture metadata and an embedded preview. Like other RAW formats it holds the complete tonal range the Micro Four Thirds sensor recorded, before any in-camera sharpening or color rendering.

You'll find .orf files coming from Olympus and OM System Micro Four Thirds bodies — the OM-1, OM-5, E-M1 and E-M10 series, and the Tough compacts' RAW mode.

Why won't a .orf file open on my computer?

ORF files aren't viewable in a browser or most built-in OS viewers, and after the Olympus-to-OM System transition, newer bodies' files often need updated desktop software before they open anywhere.
