What is a .dng file?

A DNG (Digital Negative) file is Adobe's openly documented RAW container, designed as a universal archive format for sensor data. It's the native RAW format of Leica and Ricoh cameras, most drones, and the RAW photo modes on many phones — and other RAW formats are often converted to DNG for long-term storage.

You'll find .dng files coming from Leica, Ricoh and some Pentax cameras natively, plus most drones (DJI) and phone RAW modes (Google Pixel, Apple ProRAW).

Why won't a .dng file open on my computer?

Despite being an open standard, DNG still isn't something a browser or basic photo viewer will render — and phone or drone DNGs (including lossy-compressed variants) trip up plenty of desktop tools that expect camera-brand RAW.
